I’ve heard from a lot of people lately that they are super struggling with finding more time in their side hustle, or their business. They’ve got that full time gig, and that full time family, and showing up in a meaningful way in their side hustle gets put last. And because I’ve heard this story so many times lately I wanted to talk about it a little bit.
Someone one asked me specifically if I could find an extra ten hours a week for them in their side hustle so of course, I was like, hold my beer. You guys I don’t drink beer.
We got to talking and came to find out that she really believes that having 10 extra hours will allow her to get more done. And I get how its easy to think that must be true. i guess on some level it is. but how often have you found yourself with 20 extra minutes and instead of using it in a productive way you scrolled on your phone or crammed in another episode of Nailed it?
And I’m not saying she needs to recalibrate how she uses the little down time she has. No, I’m not saying that at all. I just really want to challenge your belief that more time equals bigger payouts. That if you spend more time your side hustle or business that you will see an equivalent return on investment.
Because really, in these kinds of business that’s just not the case. You are the boss in charge. You are the one who decides how time gets spent. And you are the one who makes the case and settles for the dollars for hours mentality.
But this is not your fault. It isn’t. This is based on our industrialized economy which by the by is going the way of the dinosaur. Where we showed up and worked our solid 40 for a paycheck. We don’t ask questions, and we stick to our schedule.
SO question for you: at your day job do you ever have any down time? Are you busy all day long? is the tasks you’ve completed that day actually necessary, or are you just killing time because hanging out on Facebook, or ha! your side biz isn’t allowed? Really think about how you spend your day.
For most of us, not all of us, but most of us, our actual billable time could be about 30% less than what we actually show up for.
But the hours must be worked and so we show up.
And that’s fine when someone else is cutting your paycheck. let them pay you for messing around on Facebook for 4 of the 7.5 hours you worked on Tuesday.
But you can’t take that same logic and apply it to the way you run your own business. In your own business you have to be strategic about how you use your time, and frankly, honestly about your expectations and goals.
If you truly believe you haven’t reached the success you crave or believe you’re capable because you’re not spending enough time in your business, this next part is fully for you.
That is a lie. You don’t have to spend 40+ hours a week. I can’t tell you what the magic number is, fine it’s 7. Well, actually mine is 2. 22 to be exact and now I’m spiraling.
The point is, if you can’t get everything done in a couple of hours a day or a week, then chances are, one you’re doing too much, and two, you’re just not being strategic about the time you are doing.
Maybe you don’t have the luxury of hiring a VA to help you with the menial tasks but if you do, man, get started on that. Don’t wait. Get organized and then get help because it’ll change your game.
If you’re wondering, I have a full time day job and i do this on the side. I’ve been in the online space for over 10 years and I have a lot to say about how people connect. I try to spend the majority of my time connecting. one of the ways I do that is through this podcast. But I’m going to share with you the secret to how I only work 20 hours or so a month in my business. And I’m able to do that because where I spend my time is in direct connection, and direct service. My time is not taken up in hours of graphic design, content creation, or starting over from scratch because no one bought my product the first time. Yes, there have been moments of hustle. One of my best passive income products took me about a solid month to produce – I worked more than twenty hours that month. And then I set it and forget it, and it makes money. Every single month.
So I’m going to tell you how I do it, it’s really just three things and I’m going tell them to you right now.
The first step to getting more done in your business is to batch and automate. This is all about deciding the best use of your time, and using your self care habits to instill and abide by your own boundaries. So batching for me, looks like recording two or three podcast episodes at a time. It also looks like making whatever graphics I’ll need for an upcoming campaign in one sitting. I almost always have on some sort of instrumental playing from the youtube and I’ll pick video lengths of 1-2 hours .Once its over, thats it. I’m done for the day. So I’d better get my show notes written up in that time. Scheduling is also part of batching. It’s maybe the most important part. If you create the page and know its going live in two weeks, you’d best get the content on it or your people are going to wonder why you’re showing them literal nonsense.
I want you to take a moment and do a mental audit of what you do on your own to create one blog post, or one video or podcast. It’s a lot of steps. One of my clients is a baker – she loves cookies and we’ve bonded over the Great British Bake Off. She was looking for a couple of more hours in her side hustle and I know from personal experience how demanding a recipe blog can be. Back in the day I tried my hand at it. Yikes!
I offered her a solution that allowed to take the batching she was already doing – even one step further. And now she has multiple bakes happening at the same time, which is saving her hours every weekend.
You can do this too. What is one thing in your business that you could duplicate relatively simply? Maybe its your pinterest graphics, or your show note layouts. Maybe you can use the same outline for your stories, or split an email campaign with a blog post. It’s not more work, it’s smart work.
Step two, and this is super important is to stay visible. Whatever platform you’ve chosen to grow your online business or side hustle on, it’s important that you reach out to your audience at least once a week. The internet is wild and unsustainable. New people come along every day promising to turn dreams into reality, and all sorts of wild stuff – I don’t know what. It’s harder to be heard among the din. Sometimes it feels like you have to scream.
So when I talk about being visible, I don’t mean to that giant crowd out there. All those millions of people on instagram who are following and unfollowing each other constantly. Dont’ talk to those people. They’re not your people. Talk to your people. The ones who need you. The ones who heard something you had to say as they were ambling by, and stopped to hear more. Those are the people you need to stay visible to. They are the ones who are going to buy from from time and time again. These are the people who need your help. They are there to let you serve them. So it is your responsibility to show up for them.
There’s nothing worse than when you start following someone on the social, or in the emails and you give them hundreds of dollars, and then the completely disappear from their business. Whether they got bored, or they got overwhelmed, what they chose was to not serve their audience. And it hurts. It makes it harder to trust the next teacher or mentor that comes up.
So stay visible. offer your audience, new or old, a way to connect with you on a real individual level. Show up on a weekly live q and a in your face book or instagram. Make it even more intimate and just invite the first ten or twenty people to your google hangout or zoom call.
You should probably talk about something related to your business – talk about someone you helped, or talk about best practices – offer a space to brainstorm ideas in a safe place.
And this doesn’t have to take an excessive amount of time, right? Limit this chat to just 30 minutes once a week. jasmine star goes live once a week and invites her listeners into the chat with her and like, live coaches them. That’s why she has such a strong audience. They are her ride and die. they show up every week because she shows up every week.
And finally, the last item on my list of ways to work less and get more done in your business is to create some passive income streams. Now, I’m the first to say that passive income is definitely a misnomer, but it is possible to create something and not put a whole lot of effort behind maintaining it while it still brings in revenue.
My most successful way of doing this has been with an E-book I wrote about Pinterest. I sell an digital version of it on Amazon, and an upgraded version on my website.
Writing the book, took me about a month – and I did a small launch which was about all I had the energy for. But every month that one book brings in revenue. It brings me subscribers to my email list. It grows my audience.
You can do this too, and it doesn’t have to be an e-book. It could be a workbook, a video series or master class. It could be an e-course though I don’t recommend a particularly involved one unless you’ve tested it. There are literally dozens of things you could create or curate fast – write a sales page for it, and then sell it through your list. The simplest funnel for this is, free opt in, trip wire, email sequence.
One of my favorite health coaches, Leanne Vogel of Healthful pursuit has a nice library of keto cookbooks and keto meal plans. In her emails that she sends out every week, the footer has a little graphic that says, “treat your self” and then offers one of those meal plans. I have no idea what her conversion rate is on that, but I appreciate the simplicity of the experience.
Implementing these three things will absolutely get you to work less and get more done in your business. The hustle you have is so important, but it’s like lifting with your back and not your hips, right? You hustle too much, or in the wrong way and you’re gonna get hurt. So once these are implemented you’ll see just how much time you’ll save. Its all about organizing and staying focused.
One of the ways I stay focused is by not going back and redoing things. I just make a plan, I knock it out and I accept the b- work. The quality content is there and thats why people keep showing up.
